REV. REYNALDO A. CALUSAY, HMD DIRECTOR
Rev. Reynaldo Aguilar Calusay was born on November 10, 1950 in Legaspi City, Albay. He is the firstborn among thirteen children and thus learned responsibility early in life. As a young man, he worked to be able to get an education. While in college pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Science in Commerce, majoring in Accounting; he was attracted to the communistic propaganda as champions of the cause of the poor. Eventually, he became deeply involved in activism. Brother Rey (as he is called by many) was apprehended when martial law was declared in 1973 but was soon given amnesty and a job by the government.
Sometime after that, he observed that both the poor he tried to fight for and the rich and privileged whom he tried to fight against are equally guilty of greed, jealousy, corruption and sin. He started to think there must be a better cause for which he can give his life. In the same year he was born again and received God’s call to full time ministry. He started to serve God in every opportunity, starting with teaching little children in outstations and Sunday school. Then he resigned from his job to study in Immanuel Bible College and finished Bachelor in Christian Ministries, magna cum laude.
In 1979 after finishing Bible college, he was invited in to pastor First Assembly in Roxas City, Capiz, the same church that he pastors now. God sent him a helpmate in the person of Zenaida Magbanua, an equally passionate servant of the Lord. They are gifted with three sons, named Jireh, Ben Judah and Joses. Jireh and his wife Annah Belle are now serving in the pastoral team under their father. Benjie and Joses, both now in college are actively involved in their home church music and youth ministries. The whole family go out for church planting every summer.
In 1986, Brother Rey challenged and mobilized the then handful members of his church to fill their Jerusalem (Roxas City) with the doctrine of Christ. The vision grew to reach the neighboring towns, then the next provinces and Islands of the Philippines. It became a movement where every summer, ordinary church members, young people, professionals, fathers, mothers as volunteer are trained and sent as teams to plant churches in different target places. The movement is called SOS (Summer of Service) To date more than 300 churches have been planted through SOS.
In year 2000, Brother Rey was elected as Assistant General Superintendent of AoG Philippines and appointed to serve as Director of Foreign Missions and then Director of Home Missions. The later appointment paved the way for him to influence and mobilize the AoG Philippines for church planting. Last April, 2006 he was elected as the new General Superintendent of the AoG Philippines and was re-elected last May, 2009. For a man whose heart and passion is church planting, he sees this as a season to usher the AoG Philippines into becoming a church planting movement.
